If you are not happy with the version of Linux that comes with the Asus Eee PC, you can always install Windows on it.
With only a 4Gb SSD drive, the Eee PC won't be very useful to you after a Windows XP installation so the solution is to create a customised Windows XP installation CD which installs just the files that are neccessary. You just need a free download and a Windows XP CD.
The software is called nLite and lets you create a custom Windows XP install CD that only includes the components you want.
You can use nLite to create a Windows Vista custom install disc, but the Eee PC is not prepared to run Vista so we advice you to use Windows XP.
1. Create a new folder on your Windows PC and copy the entire content of a Windows XP install CD into it. Unless it's already in your Windows XP install CD, you will need Service Pack 2 to download and put in the folder.
2. Download nLite and unless you already have it installed, download .NET version 2 from the same page. Install it first, then nLite.
3. Start nLite, click the Next button then click the Browse button and point to the folder that contains your Windows XP files. Click Next, then Next again to skip the Presets screen.

4. If you need to add Service Pack 2 to the install CD, click the Service Pack button. Also click the Components, Unattended, Options, Tweaks and Bootable ISO buttons. Then click Next.

5. If you chose to add a Service Pack go to the location of the SP2 file and click Next. Don't select any options on the Compatibility dialog box that pops up. Click OK and close it.
6. The Components screen lets you select the Windows components you want to remove from the Windows installation. Don't remove other than the ones in the images because this is the minimum of components you need for your Asus PC.

Applications: We don't need Windows built-in applications, but you can add if you like an application from there.
Drivers: Asus provides it's own drivers for the laptop so we don't need built-in drivers.

Hardware support: Don't make any additional changes from the ones shown in the picture, unless you want to connect an Iomega Zip drive.

Keyboards: Remove everything except the language you use.

Languages: Remove everything except Western Europe and United States -> English.

Multimedia

Network: You can keep Windows Messenger but you can find something better instead.

7. Click Next to continue to the Unattended install screen. You could enter your Windows XP Product Key to save time entering every time you install Windows from this CD. Tick the box for Turn off Hibernate. Click Next.

8. Choose the options you need or just click Next.

9. Click the Owner and Network ID tab and enter the Computer Name, Workgroup and Full Name.

10. Click the Regional tab and select language and locations options. Click the Desktop themes tab and select Windows Classic as the Default theme and select the Classic Start menu option.

11. Click the Display tab and select a color depth of 32-bit. Click the Custom button for Screen resolution and choose the resolution 800 x 480. The refresh rate should be set to 60Hz. Point to Next.

12. Ignore the General tab and click the Patches tab. Select Disabled for SFC (Windows File Protection). Click Next.

13. From the General tab of the Tweaks you make various tweaks to the way your customized Windows works.

14. Click Yes on the dialog box that appears and nLite will start to create a Windows XP install CD.

15. This configuration has reduced the Windows XP installation.

16. Click Next and the Bootable ISO screen appears. Here you can create an ISO image and if you want to add the Asus Eee drivers, click the Explore button to open the folder that nLite will use to create the image or disc. Copy the Asus drivers to a subfolder that you create.
