If you don't want that Windows Messenger, the default instant messaging client from Windows to be run, you can disable it very easily.
1. Go to Start -> Run type gpedit.msc and press Enter. This will open Group Policy.

2. Click on User Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Messenger.

3. Click on Do not allow Windows Messenger to be run.

4. Right click and select Properties. Tick Enabled and press on Apply button.

Now you can't run anymore Windows Messenger.
With this method you can make a lot of tweaks on Windows XP, like hidding drives, etc. Just look around through Group Policy and search what you are interested in.

This is awesome! I wish there were an entire book on Group Policy Editor tips and tweaks. I found you via StumbleUpon.

I think this should not work voor MSN Messenger, only for windows messenger. Other good method to remove: Start/Run/RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%INFmsmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
I have seen two sites today referencing gpedit.msc. I run Windows XP Home SP2, but do not have gpedit.msc. I'm confused a little by this. I am the only 'user' on the computer, and initially set it up as such. Yes, this means I always am using the "Administrator" account. I would like to make a couple of 'tweaks', specifically in the QoS Scheduler, but don't don't know how else to do it, except with the Group Policy Editor. I've been through the Registry, but can't seem to find a key for the QoS Scheduler. Any Suggestions?

imagol4,Thats one of the shortcomings of XP Home edition. The only other way around is to edit the registry directly:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/302089Towards the bottom of the article.

To anyone that wants to know a really easy way of getting rid of Windows Messenger do the following: Open up Add or Remove Programs from the control panel. Go to "Add/Remove Windows Components" It is listed there, as well as MSN Explorer. Just unclick them.

I would recommend an application like XPLite in order to remove it instead of disabling it. In my case I used nLite to remove it from the Windows XP installation, so it was never installed on my PC, so no need of XPLite either.

You can also disable it in services.msc

No sP00N, you can't. That is NOT Windows Messenger. Anyway, as I said before, I recommend not to even install it.
