Windows XP has a feature that keeps track of when a file was last accessed. This comes in handy to defragmentation programs when they have to decide which file has the most accesses. Defragmenting your hard drive based on the most accessed files isn't a great speed improvement. Therefore you can disable the file access time stamp to give yourself a noticeable performance increase.
Microsoft says that this increase is noticeable only in case you have more than 70,000 folders, but many told that it does the job even if you have less folders:
1. Open the Registry Editor (Start -> Run..., type regedit and click OK).
2. Once the Registry Editor has loaded, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> SYSTEM -> CurrentControlSet -> Control -> FileSystem.
3. You may see an entry called NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate. If so, skip to step 4. If you do not see this entry, right-click and select New -> DWORD Value. Name it NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate.
4. Modify the value of the key to 1. This disables the last access update feature.
5. The change will take effect after you restart the computer.
